The Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology was established in 1960 under the scheme sponsored by Govt. of India and Govt. of Maharashtra. The Govt. of India conferred on the Institute, the Deemed to be University status in 2002. The NIT Act passed by the parliament in 2007 declares it as an "Institute of National Importance" for India. The institute has a campus of about 214 acres (866,000 m) near Ambazari Lake. The distance of the campus from Nagpur Railway Station is 8 km. and 7 km. from Nagpur Airport. The campus has retained and increased its green cover, rich in flora and fauna. All departments and laboratories are housed on the campus.
