Jawaharlal Institute of PG Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) was established in 1823 as "Ecole de Médicine de Pondichery," a medical school by the French imperial government in India to train French citizens in Pondicherry. The college was upgraded as a Regional Centre and named as Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) on 13th July 1964. The College is a Autonomous Institution under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. IPMER campus is located in the western entrance of Pondicherry on the highway and spread over 195 acres of sloping land that is a hillock, known in vernacular as ‘Gorimedu’. The staff strength of the institute is about 3000. The teaching faculty consists of 300 experienced teachers and 565 resident doctors. The institute conducts a number of medical and paramedical courses.
