No More Class X Board exams From 2013

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has declared that there will be no common board exams for class X from 2013 onwards.

The CBSE had introduced continuous and comprehensive evaluation method last year which made the board exams optional. The initiative was taken to ease the students from the pressure of board exams. The students were also given an option to choose among school based program or board exams.

However, the board has decided to completely replace the board exams with school based program from 2013 onwards by making it mandatory. Surprisingly, very few students chose school based examinations conducted in March, 2011. More than 90% students in Andhra Pradesh opted for board exams. School based examination received very poor response at national level as nearly 6 lakh students opted for board exams out of a total of 9 lakh students.

The apprehension regarding the credibility of school based examinations compared to those of CBSE board exams is one of the probable reasons for students not preferring school examinations. However, the figures have improved this year in Andhra Pradesh with about 40% students opting for school examinations.

CBSE has decided to randomly verify the corrected answer sheets in order to ensure that assessment has been fair. Moreover, it has also decided to provide question papers to the schools for school based examinations so that only the assessment part is done at school level.
